Governance and Managing a Board

Objective:
To strengthen board effectiveness by improving governance practices, enhancing strategic oversight, and developing skills in managing conflict constructively within board settings.

Overview:
The session focuses on helping board members assess their current level of governance maturity across key areas including strategy, role clarity, performance, financial oversight, risk management, and board culture. Participants evaluated whether their board operates at a compliance, monitoring, strategic, or impact-led level.

A key component of the training explored conflict management using the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI). This enabled participants to identify their default conflict-handling style (e.g., competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, accommodating) and reflect on how these behaviours influence board dynamics and decision-making.

Key Outcomes:

  • Increased awareness of what high-performing, impact-led governance looks like
  • Improved understanding of roles, responsibilities, and boundaries at board level
  • Enhanced ability to assess and strengthen board performance and oversight
  • Greater insight into personal and collective approaches to conflict
  • Identification of practical actions to improve board effectiveness and culture

Conclusion:
The session provides a structured framework for boards to reflect on their current practices and identify targeted improvements, with a strong emphasis on moving towards more strategic, outcome-focused, and collaborative governance.
